In Ethiopia, coffee production is a longstanding tradition. This is where the well known coffee plant, Coffea arabica, originates. Today, this coffee plant is grown in different parts of the world.

Though the coffee production in Ethiopia is only around 3% of the total global coffee market, it is very important to Ethiopian economy. Sixty percent of their foreign income comes from coffee. Not only that, 15 million of the population rely on coffee production for their livelihood. Their biggest coffee export brought $350 million in 2006.

Despite a good coffee production record, Ethiopia is also one of the countries affected by the coffee rust disease.
